Merlyn John Welch

March 29, 1943 — April 5, 2018

GROVETON - Merlyn John Welch, 75, died at his home on Lancaster Road, Thursday evening, April 5, 2018, after a period of declining health. His family was by his side.

John was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on March 29, 1943 the son of Violet Elizabeth Platt Burt. He served for a time in the US Army and was a long time recovery operator for the Groveton Paper Board. He enjoyed woodworking and motorcycling but spending time with his family was the most important part of his life.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a Free and Accepted Mason.

Surviving family members include his wife of 44 years Sharon Savage Welch of Groveton; his children, Kimberly Randall and husband Rob of Littleton, Paula Harris and husband Wade of Clarksville, TN, Francene Brown of Epsom, NH, Celena Davenport and husband Dan of Whitefield; eight grandchildren, Ashley Hayward, Ryan Hayward, Taylor Langkau Planz, Mallory Langkau, Erica Langkau, Hunter Brown, Tanner Davenport, Grayson Davenport; two great-grandchildren, Owen Thompson, Ivee Thompson; siblings, Theresa Brooks and husband Phil of Groveton, Ken Burt and wife Sally of Lisbon, Rita Bigger and husband Ron of Tonawanda, NJ, Rayfield "JR" Burt of Groveton, Raylene Degreenia of Lunenburg, Rene Burt and wife Lori of Groveton, Ronald Burt of Groveton; a son-in-law Joseph Langkau of Lancaster; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Violet E. Burt; his step-father Rayfield "Red" Burt Sr; a brother Roderick "Trigger" Burt; and his beloved dog Sadie.

A graveside service with military honors will be held Saturday, May 12 at 11:00 AM in the Northumberland Cemetery.
