Mildred M. Congdon

Lancaster - Mildred M. (Cummings) Congdon, 95, died peacefully on March21, 2011 surrounded by her loving family at Sterling Village Nursing Home, Sterling, MA.

Mildred was born in Lancaster, NH on May 15, 1915, the daughter of the late Moses and Lucian Vallie Cummings.  Her family lived in Groveton where she attended her first three years of school then they moved to Lancaster where they purchased a farm known as the Cummings farm on Reed Rd.  Mildred graduated from Lancaster Academy in 1933.  She received training from the School of Modern Kindergarten in California and operated a private kindergarten for seven years.  She was one of the first employees when Santa's Village opened.  She also worked at Lancaster National Bank and then retired from George M. Stevens Insurance.

Mildred was a Communicant of All Saints Church, past Regent of the Daughters of Isabella, past co-president of the Tabernacle Society.  She was a member of the Coos County RSVP for over 20 years and the Coos Quilters.  She was a 1500 hour volunteer at Weeks Medical Center.  She was a past member of the Weeks State Park and the Historical Society.  Mildred's greatest joy was to be surrounded by her loving family.  She enjoyed her gardening, quilting, sewing, and knitting.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Andrew Congdon, her daughters Lucy Berry of White River Jct., VT and Ann Lavers and husband Richard of Fitchburg, MA,  five beloved grandchildren Michael Lavers of Falmouth, MA, Kevin Berry and wife Rachel of Roslindale, MA, Stephanie Franz and husband Eric of Norfolk, MA, Brian Berry and wife Lesley of Claremont, NH, and Richard Lavers and wife Christen of Concord, NH,  Loving grandmother to eight great grandchildren Alexis Berry, Timothy Berry, Mathew Franz, Eric Franz, Nolan Franz, Grace Berry, Jacob Berry, and James Lavers.  She also leaves her loving sisters Gladys Stark of Lancaster and Esther Greenwood of Lancaster.  She was predeceased by her brother Edmond Cummings, and sisters Olive Paine, and Elizabeth Meldrum.

Calling hours will be held Thursday March 24, 2011, from 4 to 6 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning at 10 AM at All Saint's Church, Lancaster. Burial will be held in the spring in the Calvary Cemetery, Lancaster.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Weeks Memorial Library Endowment Fund, 128 Main St., Lancaster, NH 03584-3031.
