Murray Ross Vashaw

January 14, 1926 — September 7, 2023

Murray Ross Vashaw, 97, of Lancaster, NH died on September 7, 2023 at his home.
.
Born January 14, 1926 in Lancaster, he was the son of Joseph Henry Vashaw and Eva (Merrow) Vashaw. He was the husband of Lois Jean (Mason) (Magoon) Vashaw for 54 years.

Though orphaned early in life, his extended family provided a home for him and his sister Iris, giving him a deep respect for those who take in children.

His high school education was interrupted when he enlisted in the service during World War II. There he served in the Army Air Force Communication Service in the South Pacific. Following the war, he returned to his education and graduated from Lancaster Academy in 1947.
From graduation he sold cars and worked in construction and was involved in the building of the Siwooganock Bank, Moore Dam, the I-93 extension, and the pipeline in Sutton Quebec. He was then employed by the US Postal Service as a letter carrier for 29 years.

For the past 26 years, he was often seen in the distance faithfully mowing the fairgrounds.

Murray was a true member of the community. He considered it and the people more than a place to live. The friends and citizens were as extended family, and he often mentioned how lucky he was to have such great friends.

He was an avid hunter and over his 97 years he managed to bring home 79 deer. One of his few regrets in life was that he was unsuccessful in getting the elusive 80th.

He was a committed buyer and seller of many things, including cars, saddles, and guns. He was a true example of a Yankee trader.

He is predeceased by his wife Lois and sister Iris, and is survived by “his boys” 3 stepsons and their wives, Scott Magoon and wife Susan (Reynold) of Lancaster NH and Waltham MA; David Magoon and wife Roxanne (Whiting) of Franklin, MA, and Bruce Magoon and wife Joanna (Clifford) of Warner NH, 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

At Murray’s request there will be a private burial ceremony.
