GUILDHALL - Nancy Hopkins Colborn passed away May 14, 2018. She was a long-time resident of Lancaster, New Hampshire, and recently Guildhall, Vermont. Nancy was born in Peterborough, NH on November 16, 1933 to Gladys Weeks and Frank A. Hopkins. In her early years she resided in both Washington, DC and Greenfield, NH. She attended Hannah More Academy and Mt. Vernon Prep School both in Washington, DC and graduated with a degree In Physical Education from George Washington University.
Nancy married John A. Colborn III in June of 1954. Following their marriage, she worked as a Physical Education instructor at Gallaudet University In Washington, DC. While at Gallaudet, she coached women's varsity basketball and started the first field hockey team at the school. She also became a women's national basketball official.
Jay, Nancy and family moved to Antrim, New Hampshire where she worked as a Physical Education instructor at Crotchet Mountain School for the Deaf in Greenfield. Later they moved to Lancaster where she worked as a Physical Education teacher at White Mountains Regional High School from 1972-1990. While at WMRHS, Nancy started the first field hockey varsity team that she coached for twenty years, She also coached girls' basketball and softball.
Over the course of her working career, Nancy won many honors and awards including: Field Hockey Coach of the Year, Athletic Director of the Year, Walter Smith Memorial Award, NHIAA Service Award, and the Carol Dozibrin Advancement of Girls' Sports Award. Most recently, the field hockey field at WMRHS was dedicated in her honor.
Nancy was a member of the NH Athletic Directors and Coaches Associations. She was also a member of the Lancaster Congregational Church and Greenfield NH Historical Society. In addition, she loved watching WMRHS field hockey games, spending time at Maidstone Lake, gardening and playing bridge.
She is survived by three children: Janet Foryan and husband Alexander, Lynn Andrews and husband Jeff, William H. Colborn and wife Kristine, nine grandchildren; Brian Roberts, Katie Gray and husband Travis, Stacie Roberts and William Lemire, Becky Roberts, Thomas Andrews, Quincy Andrews, Stephanie Andrews, Olivia Llewelyn and husband Mathew, Emalie Colborn and Ryan Call, three great grandchildren Kaya, Natalie and Landon and companion Robert Clark.
At Nancy's request there will be no public services, but a private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.
