Olive M. Smith

LUNENBURG- Olive M. Smith, 94, of Maillett Road, died Sunday afternoon December 31, 2006, at Saint Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Smith was born in Berlin, New Hampshire on June 11, 1912, the daughter of James Arthur and Frances (McKinley) Milligan.

Olive graduated from Berlin High School in 1930 and went on to graduate from Keene State and Lyndon State College, earning her Bachelor's Degree in teaching. For 34 years she was employed with the Lunenburg School District, working as a teacher in Gilman and Lunenburg, and as an Assistant Principal. While working for the school district she was the Hot Lunch Agent for many years and, treasurer of the Gilman P.T.A. for 25 years, and served as Library Trustee in Gilman for 39 years.

Memberships include, the Vermont Congress of P.T.A., the Caledonia and Southern Essex Retired Teachers Association, honorary member of the Vermont Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member and volunteer of the Gilman Senior Citizens' Club, and was the past director on the board of the Northeastern Vermont Agency on Aging.

Olive was very active with the Eastern Star and was a fifty-year member of Adah Chapter # 39, O.E.S. in Concord, VT where she was a past officer and treasurer. She was the District Deputy Grand Matron of District #5 from 1985-1987, Grand Representative of Alberta, Canada, O.E.S., and Grand Marshal of Vermont O.E.S. from 1982-1983. She was also a member of the Charlotte Morris Past Matrons and Past Patrons of Vermont, Grand Representatives Association of Vermont, and the Green Mountain Deputies Association.

Olive was also a long time member of the Congregational Church in Berlin, and was later a member of the Gilman Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 15 years, and was treasurer.

Her hobbies and interests include crocheting, knitting, arts & crafts, reading, and stamp collecting.

Family members include two grandsons; Steven Reddy of Contocook, and Jeffrey Reddy of Florida, two great grandsons, Steven Reddy Jr. and John Robert Reddy; a sister Ruby Milligan Hills of Belfast, ME, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by, her husband Dugald Stewart Smith and her daughter Elisabeth Smith Reddy.

There are no calling hours. A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 6, at 11:00 AM at the Lunenburg Methodist Church, Reverend John Somers will officiate. Burial will be held in the spring in the Riverside Cemetery, Lunenburg.
