September 23, 1927 — February 22, 2016

LANCASTER - Peggy K. Evans, 88, of Lancaster died on February 22, 2016 at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, following a brief illness.

Peggy was born in Wilder, VT on September 23, 1927 to Nichol and Belle (Gammell) Kay.  She moved to Lancaster at three months old where she resided for the remainder of her life.  On June 19, 1948 she married the love of her life, Franklin "Bum" Evans, with whom she shared 54 years of marriage until his death in 2002.

After graduation from Lancaster Academy, she worked at Evans Restaurant and Connecticut Vally Dairy.  When she and Bum had their children she became a full-time Mom, a role she loved.  After her children were older, she worked in several local businesses including, Lancaster Shoe Store, Sullivan Drug Store and finally Rite Aid.  Peggy was a Lifetime Girl Scout and was the leader of Junior Troop 117 for many years.  Peggy will be remembered as "Mrs. Evans, Troop Leader" by those women who grew up in Lancaster as well as the many rainy camping trips.  It was often said that rain always followed Peggy's troops on their camping trips. Peggy was also very involved in the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ.  She served as the church collector until 2015 and was a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years.  She taught the church's youngest members, nursery and kindergarten age.  She also served on a variety of church committees throughout her life and especially loved working at the church's annual auction.  In 1980, Peggy was recognized by the town of Lancaster as its Citizen of the Year.

Peggy was known for her smile and her giggle.  She was always willing to lend a hand, cook for those who needed a meal and give her time in any way she could.  She was a loving and devoted Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma.  Her children and their families were of up most importance to her.  Every birthday celebration included balloons.  Being together for family meals and holidays brought great enjoyment to all.  Peggy's other hobbies included cooking especially her Christmas cookies and her infamous Coffee Ring, and gardening.  Peggy loved to be outside playing in the dirt.  Her container gardens and flower beds were seen by many.

Peggy was Mom to three children, Marsha and Roger Gingue of Bethlehem, NH, Gary and Becky Evans of Boscawen, NH and Lori and Bob Spencer of Lancaster.  She had eight grandchildren, Gary and Mary Ann Evans, Michelle and Brandyn Lewis, Derek Evans and Virginia Baker, Nicole and Patrick Fitzpatrick, Kristine and Barry Merrow, Lindsey Spencer, Tom and Jessica Spencer and Cassie Spencer.  She also had 12 great-grandchildren:  Jacob, Joshua, Sarah, Lily, Vincent, Ginnelle, Isabella, Baidyn, Brielle, Kaelin, Patrick and Scott.

Visiting hours will be held Friday afternoon and evening, March 4th, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster.  A funeral service will follow Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ.  Reverend Sharon van der Laan, pastor, will officiate.  Burial will be in the spring in Summer Street Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peggy's memory to the Kitchen Fund at the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ (LCUCC), Attention Kitchen Fund, 142 Main Street, Lancaster, NH 03584
