East Concord, VT- Phyllis Esther (Woodbury) Briggs a resident of East Concord, VT passed away at age 93 March 18, 2013 at The Manor in Morrisville, VT. An injury sustained in November 2012 requiring surgery led to declining health. For nearly a year Phyllis happily resided at Forest Hill Residential Care Homer in Hyde Park, VT.
Phyllis was born on September 17, 1919. She attended Vermont schools in St. Johnsbury, East Concord and Concord High School. Phyllis' employment included: Factory work in Gilman, VT and Littleton, NH, Retail sales in Lancaster, NH and St. Johnsbury, VT, Avon representative, served as Postmaster in East Concord, VT and often worked at the Lower Waterford and East Barnet, VT Post Offices.
She had membership in the East Concord United Methodist Church and its associated UMW group. She belonged to the VT Order of Eastern Star Adar Chapter # 39 occupying all chairs at one time or another. As member of Concord Historical Society she often served as host at the Museum's annual Open House. For many years she was active in the Essex County Extension Service assisting with 4-H and Home Demonstration programs. While her children were in school she was active locally and statewide with PTA and often assisted with area school health clinics. Phyllis enjoyed working on and organizing church dinners plus assisting with various fund raising events. Phyllis would often play her piano. Growing African violets provided much pleasure for her.
Phyllis was predeceased by: parents Howard O. and Mabel (Fisher) Woodbury, husband of 71 years Leslie C. Briggs (Leslie died on 1-5-2009), sisters Beverly, Norma and husband Claude Briggs, brother Howard and wife Emma Woodbury, Sister in Law Bette Roach, Brother in Law George Grant, and nephew John Woodbury.
Phyllis married Leslie C. Briggs on September 26, 1937. She is survived by a daughter Janice Boulais of Plaistow, NH son Lindsey of Littleton, NH and Irvine, CA and son Gary and wife Linda of Morrisville, VT, Brother in Law Raymond Road of Pooler, GA, 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 1 great great grand child plus several nieces, nephews and some very special friends.
The Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster, NH will at a later spring date provide information regarding a graveside service to be held at the Riverside Cemetery in South Lunenburg, VT. A social gathering is planned for that date as well.
