Richard L. Cruz

LANCASTER, NH - Richard L. Cruz Sr., 81, died early Monday morning October 8, 2018, at Country Village Genesis Eldercare Center, Lancaster after battling cancer.
Mr. Cruz was born on August 2, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Theodore and Emma (Scherle) Cruz. He was raised in Brooklyn and was a graduate of Newton High School, Class of 1955. Richard was drafted into the US Army while attending college. He married the love of his life on Feb. 18, 1960.

He started working as a draftsman for Con Ed and then became a journeyman lineman. In 1967 he moved to Wyalusing, PA, and with his wife, Catherine H. Gallagher, where they raised their family. He worked for Penelec and then Claverack REC as a journeyman lineman. In the early 80's he started his own business, Cruz Electric, which he owned and operated and worked with his youngest brother until his death and then continued until 2017. He mentored his son and grandson in electrical work over the years.

He was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Blue Lodge. He enjoyed sports, particularly events his grandchildren participated in. He attended as many sporting and school events for his children and later grandchildren and great grandchildren. Richard attended and traveled to many wrestling events, softball and basketball games; he was an avid RAM fan. After the death of his wife, he traveled from his home in PA to his daughter's in VT to attend school functions and end of year field trips with his grandson and granddaughter. He enjoyed attending the Lancaster Fair and watching his grandson in the tractor pulls.
He will be remembered by many as a devoted husband to his ailing wife, dedicated father to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as a dependable friend to many. Richard was always there to lend a hand, shoulder to cry on and words of wisdom or just a hug. He often would cook meals for his family and friends. Many will remember his contagious smile and his overalls as well as fixing anything for anyone. He will be missed by his faithful and loyal companion, Colt.

Surviving family members include his children and their spouses, Richard Cruz, Jr. and Leigh Trasco, Ulster, PA, Dawn Rogers and Thomas, Sr, Guildhall, VT; grandchildren, Tane Bates and spouse Ken, Camptown, PA, Gina Genoble, Midland, TX, Ricky Cruz, III , Stevensville, PA, Olivia Cruz Sayre, PA, Thomas Rogers, Jr, Guildhall, VT , Zach Trasco, Ulster, PA and Emma-Mae Rogers, Guildhall, VT; and 2 great-grandchildren, Rorrie and Evan Bates, Stevensville, PA, sister in law, Helen Dilillo, Long Island, NY and his nieces and many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and parents' in-law, spouse, Catherine and 2 brothers, Theodore Cruz Jr. and Frederick Cruz.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at the family's convenience.
