DALTON - Robert P. Bigelow, 80, of Dalton Road, died Friday morning April 29, 2011, at the Veterans Adminstration Hospital, White River Jct., after a long illness.

Mr. Bigelow was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, February 11, 1931 the son of Maurice Ellsworth and Elsie Hattie (Peck) Bigelow.

He was raised in Danville and attended schools there. During the Korean Conflict he served with the US Army artillery division. He has worked various jobs including mill work, construction, including the Comerford Dam, and was employed for a time with St. Johnsbury Trucking Company. For 19 years he worked for Connors and Hoffman in St. Johnsbury. For 6 years he lived and worked in Florida.

He was a former member and Assistant Chief of the Dalton Fire Department. Other interests include hunting, gardening, and watching stark car racing.

Family members include his wife Evelyn M. (Rodger) Bigelow of Dalton; seven children, Katherine Merry Leach of Littleton, Kenneth Edward Flood of Concord, NH, Donna Lee Sleep of Whitfield, Lillian Harriman of Whitefield, Rose Szakmary of Twin Mountian, Brenda Rosebrook of Reynolds Station, Kentucky, Lois Flynn of Lancaster; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters Beulah Hutchinson of Danville, Margery Fields of North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant brother and two sisters Dorothy Loren and June Withers.

Memorial visiting hours will be held Tuesday evening, May 3, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A graveside service with military honors will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM in Cushman Cemetery, Dalton. Rev. Dennis Bowman, pastor of the Dalton Congregational Church will officiate.
