JEFFERSON - Robert E. Smith, 71, of Presidential Highway, died at his home Thursday morning, May 31, 2018.
Mr. Smith was born in Lancaster on August 1, 1946 the son of Elbridge L. and Hattie May (Gray) Smith. He was a lifetime resident of Jefferson and graduate of Berlin High School. He also attended Manpower Training School, Manchester, where he trained to be an auto mechanic.
For 30 years he was employed as a mechanic for Roberts Motor Sales and for approximately 20 years he delivered heating oil for Stiles Fuel Company. He retired 4 years ago. Robert was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He was a member of the New England Trappers Association and the Vermont Trappers Association. He also enjoyed woodworking.
Robert served 20 years with the National Guard and at one time won a sharpshooter competition which led to a further national competition in Arkansas.
Surviving family members include his wife of 50 years, Nancy (DeBlois) Smith of Jefferson; a son Jamie Smith of Jefferson; a daughter Tammy Smith of Burlington, VT; grandchildren Justin and Tegan; a sister Linda J. Smith of Littleton; and a brother-in-law and close friend David DeBlois and his wife Donna. He was predeceased by an infant daughter Melissa Sue and a brother Gary W. Smith.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday morning, June 5, from 11:00AM to 1:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A funeral service will follow immediately after at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Reverend Dean A. Stiles, pastor of the Jefferson Christian Church, will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Jefferson.
