LANCASTER - Samuel Bartow Sr., 95, died peacefully March 18, 2007 at the home of his longtime caregiver, Cheryl MacKillop, at 580 North Road, "The Farm", surrounded by his extended family.
Mr. Bartow was born on July 18, 1911, the youngest of four children of Rev. Howard Key Bartow and Florence (Cragin) Bartow in Cohasset, Massachusetts.
He married his wife Alma (Bird) Bartow on January 1, 1935, in Boston, MA, at the Ritz Carlton.
For many years he was employed with Boston Sand & Gravel, retiring in 1960. At that time he and Alma moved to Lancaster where he enjoyed his new enterprise of restoring old homes for resale. He also enjoyed skiing, playing golf and cruising area lakes and ponds in his Boston Whaler.
Sam generously gave his time and resources to the community. He was a driving force behind the re-opening of Mount Prospect ski area in Lancaster, he supported Dollars for Scholars, and his gifted ability for investment was a blessing to St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he served many years on the finance committee. He was also of the St. Paul's Vestry Committee, the Rotary Club, and the Waumbek Country Club.
Family members include a son Samuel Bartow Jr. of Portland, Oregon; two daughters, Anna Key Bartow of New Haven, CT, Elizabeth Campen of Billings, Montana; 8 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Alma and siblings Howard Jr., Mary and Katherine.
Visiting hours will be held Friday evening March 23, from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at St. Paul's Church in Lancaster. Rev. David Rose, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster.
