Thomas Wayne Dodge, age 66, passed away on March 30, 2024 at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA. Wayne was born in Danbury, CT on December 18, 1957 to Mary A. (Cunningham) Dodge of Southbury, CT and the late Franklin Nash Dodge, former residents of Lancaster, NH and Gilman, VT. He grew up in Redding, CT and attended Joel Barlow High School as well as Henry Abbott Technical School.
Wayne was a witty and gifted man with many interests. He had a warm chuckle and an adventurous, tenacious spirit. Wayne was a natural engineer with a penchant for building and rebuilding cars and electronics. After an accident that injured his spinal cord in 1976, Wayne learned to use a motorized wheelchair and developed numerous tools and skills to help him navigate life independently. After rehabilitation in NY and CT, he entered the Boston Center for Independent Living program and settled in Lynn, MA. Wayne could be seen zipping along in his chair in his neighborhood and liked to ride the train. He later relocated to Pittsfield, MA where he lived for 7 years. He was an avid fisherman and loved animals, especially his cat Sylvester. Wayne had many caretakers, aids, and medical personnel that loved him dearly and worked hard to help him even during the most difficult of times. The family would like to thank these individuals for their enduring care and support during all these years.
Wayne is survived by his mother and five siblings; Barbara Cary of Gloucester, MA, Brian Dodge of Daytona Beach Shores, FL, June Sawchyn of Danbury, CT, Sharon Sawchyn of Woodbury, CT and Alicia Nerich of Tilton, NH. Also, his beloved nephews and nieces; Danae Sawchyn, Gregory Nerich, Ethan Sawchyn, Lauren Sawchyn, Justine Dus, Katherine Lewis, and especially Barry Moore, Jr. and his girlfriend Cindy DeLong who lovingly cared for Wayne.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Riverside Cemetery in South Lunenberg, VT in May at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boston Center for Independent Living and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.
