MAIDSTONE - Timothy Stephen Gormley, Sr. , 73, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Maidstone Lake, Vermont, died on July 6, 2013 at his home on the lake after a long illness.
He was born in Lancaster on Elm Street.
His parents are the late Franklin Joseph and M. Patricia O'Leary Gormley.
He is survived by his sisters, Sally Hanaway of Port Orange, FL, and Susan Jacklin of Alton, NH.
He was predeceased by his sisters Nancy Bue and Patricia Hall.
He loved his Irish heritage.
Timothy was a retired school superintendent in two states (Maine and New Hampshire) and taught and administered on all levels of public school education.
At age 17 in his senior year at Lancaster Academy, he left high school and joined the United States Air Force.
He served as an air traffic controller and earned his high school equivalency.
He went on to graduate from Plymouth State, the University of New Hampshire, and Boston University, earning advanced education degrees.
He was a charter member in Vermont of Phi Delta Kappa. He was a life member of the National Education Association.
In his public service, he received many awards, including Rotarian of the Year and Andrus Award recipient, AARP.
He served in many capacities, a favorite AARP as Executive Board Member, New Hampshire, and President, Concord Chapter.
Timothy was nominated to serve on the State Committee on Aging (SCOA) by Governor John Lynch.
He also served on the Executive Board of Northeast Quality Healthcare Foundation.
His family includes his loving wife, Geraldine, of 48 years, who cared for him when he was a patient in home hospice. They have two sons, Timothy, Jr., a radiologist in Washington, and F. Joseph, a founder of the law firm Baldwin, Kagan, and Gormley, LLC, Annapolis, Maryland.
When the boys were early teens, their father offered them flight lessons, and both did solo flights at 16.
So that they could do trail rides at Maidstone, each was given a 125 Kawasaki motorcycle, which was also street legal. A favorite treat was the purchase of comic books, one for each.
Tim, Jr., and his wife, Miriam, have four children, Timothy III, Gillian, Gretchen, and John. Timothy III continues with flight lessons.
F. Joseph and his wife, Erin, have two sons, Matthew and Ben.
Most of all, the grandparents enjoyed their time at Maidstone with their six grandchildren.
There are no visiting hours.
A memorial mass will be celebrated Saturday July 20 at 1:00 PM at All Saints Church in Lancaster. The family requests that in Tim's honor in lieu of flowers that you help a senior citizen and be kind to children.
