LUNENBURG, VT - Wade H. Hubbard III died peacefully on March 21st, 2018 at his home in Lunenburg, Vermont. A long time resident of Lancaster, New Hampshire, he was born on August 29th, 1929 in Lynchburg, Virginia to Mildred Estelle Bass and Wade H. Hubbard Jr. He spent his early years residing in Buffalo, New York where he graduated from Lafayette High School. He was a member of the varsity football team and was also a member of the West Side Rowing Club where he was selected to compete in the United States Rowing Championships as a member of the Senior Heavy Weight 8 oared shells and the Senior Heavy Coxy 4 oared shells. Both of these crews won their events and were national champions for three years running from 1949 to 1951. To this day his crew is still considered among the "Best Ever".
Upon graduation, he served in the Korean conflict after enlisting in the Naval Air Corps Reserve. Following an honorable discharge, he took employment with Niagara Mohawk Corporation. He quickly realized without a college degree he would be passed over for career advancement opportunities so accepted a crew scholarship award to attend Boston University graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.
This is where he met the love of his life and soul mate Jean Frances Magoon. The two college sweethearts were married on June 9th, 1956. He joined Dennison Manufacturing Company of Framingham, Massachusetts as a supervisor in the purchasing clerical office and was later promoted to the marketing group in product development. Although he really enjoyed working at Dennison, his wife's family owned a summer camp "up north" on Martin Meadow Pond in Lancaster, New Hampshire where they both came to the realization the area would provide a great atmosphere to live and raise their growing family. In 1963 with 3 children they made the move to Lancaster. He accepted a position with Groveton Paper Company in Groveton, New Hampshire. The family loved living in the "North Country" taking advantage of what it offered. Joining the Mount Prospect Ski Club provided fantastic times for the family and Wade gladly accepted the part-time job of Treasurer of the ski club and took membership in the work crew which was a challenge at times. A warm welcome was also extended by the Lancaster Congregational Church where his wife quickly joined the choir and the now 5 children joined the church Sunday school. Over the years he was also a long time treasurer, Chairman of the Deacon's and Church Moderator. He also was elected for three terms, a total of nine years, to the White Mountains Regional School Board of which he was the Chairman of the Board for five of those years.
After 17 years with Groveton Papers Company where he was the Product Manager, he realized that the competition was so fierce and despite many efforts on his part to stem the tide, the end of an era was near. The "working place" was rapidly shifting to a truly global presence like an express train. Being aware of the pending mill closure he submitted his resignation and in 1981 accepted a position with James River Corporation in Berlin, New Hampshire as a technical analyst. While the James River Mill was thriving, the inevitable fate of the paper industry was looming and in September of 1991 he retired on a medical disability. He continued to deeply feel the effect of how the Groveton and Berlin paper mill closings affected the local community and economy.
His favorite place on earth was Camp Mayo on Martin Meadow Pond. He was a great story teller, fisherman, fixer of things, ring toss player and above all enjoyed the laughter & love of family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Mildred and Judy, his brother Carroll, his favorite aunt and uncle Carroll and Julia Jamerson, his in-laws Mayo and Katherine Magoon who he adored, his brother in-laws Bruce Magoon and Thomas Magoon and his beloved son, Thomas.
