LANCASTER - Walter J. Hryzan passed away peacefully on Monday September 24, 2018, at home with his loving companion and friends by his side after a long courageous fight.
Walter was born on June 14, 1949, in Putnam, CT the youngest of 15 children to Michalena (Kachnowicz) and Sylvester Hryzan and graduated from Tourtellott Memorial High School in N. Grosvenordale in 1968.
After graduation Walter enlisted in the US Army and served proudly and valiantly in Vietnam until he was critically wounded on January 26, 1969. After being discharged, Walter returned to CT to work at the family farm and then moved to Bethlehem, NH in the early 1980's. He was actively involved with the VFW, first with Howard H. Shawney Post #816 where he served as post commander and other offices and also participated in services at the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC and then with John W. Weeks Post #3041 where he served as Trustee, M.O.C. Pup Tent #3, Seam Squirrel, among other things. He was also a member of the DAV and the Elks. Walter was always ready and willing to help anyone in need.
Walter is survived by his loving companion and soul mate of 26 years, Betty Trudeau: his sister Theresa (Edward) Zelazo of Dover, NH and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018, from 5 to 8 PM at Bailey Funeral Home 210 Main Street, Lancaster, NH. A military memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2019, at 12:00 noon at the Colonel Town Community Camp, Community Camp Road, Lancaster, NH.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Riverside Rescue, 236 Riverside Avenue, Lunenburg, VT 05906 in honor of his trusted dog and best friend, Gulliver who was adopted from Riverside Rescue.
