LUNENBURG, VT - Walter Franklin Leighton, 83, died on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, after a battle with lung cancer.
Walt was born in Gorham, Maine on February 28, 1927, the son of Ernest F. Leighton and Marian (Hodgdon) Leighton. He attended Westbrook schools and graduated from Westbrook High School. He served three tours in the United States Navy and is a veteran of both WWII and the Korean War. He lived in California for many years before returning to Westbrook, Maine. He retired to Vermont, spending his time gardening and canning.
He is survived by four sons, Michael, Mark, Jeffrey, and Kenneth Leighton; his brother Donald Leighton of Westbrook, Maine; nieces and nephews in Maine; cousins Judy Young and Amos and Weston Colby of Lunenburg, Vt., Marian Ryan of Oregon, Richard Martin of Guildhall, Vt., Millard Martin of Lancaster, NH, the Hodgdons in Granby, Vt.; and his adopted family, Edson, Deborah, Natalie, and Olivia Thomas also of Lunenburg, Vt.
Walt was predeceased by his only sister, Ernestine, and brothers, Albert, William, Paul, Richard, and Lloyd.
There are no visiting hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, August 16, at 1:30 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook Maine.
