GROVETON - William F. Glidden, 81, of Brown Road, died peacefully Saturday morning, May 14, 2022, at The Morrison in Whitefield.
Bill was the only boy of two sisters of which one was his twin. The oldest was Joan Garland that currently lives in Arizona. His sister May Canton lived in Groveton for many years and has predeceased him. He is also predeceased by his mother Martha (Eddy) Richards, father Roland Glidden, and stepfather Frank Richards.
In June of 1963 Bill married Eleanor L. Hopps. They bought a piece of land on Brown Road, Groveton, where they built a house and resided their whole life together. They had two daughters, Twila Glidden-Hawley and husband Glenn Hawley of Guilford, CT, and Stacey Glidden-Hodge, widow to Stephen Hodge Sr, of Groveton. Bill was a proud grampa to a granddaughter Martha Faye-Fern Hodge.
For 40 years Bill worked in the local paper mill under the ownership of several companies, the last of which was Wausau Paper. When he retired from the mill, he had worked his way up from operating the #5 paper machine to a machine tender. He also worked for the Town of Northumberland Police Department as a part-time police officer for 28 years.
In his early years he also had his own business selling CB radios and supplies. Whenever the town purchased a new patrol car or ambulance, Bill installed the radios and other electronic equipment. He was a member of the American Legion for several years. In his spare time some of his favorite pastimes included camping when the kids were younger, hanging out with his best friend Steve Hodge, and riding his ATV and snowmobile with his best friend and family. His all-time favorite activity was fishing. Bill and Eleanor like to go down to the lower meadows in the summer to watch the eagles and other wildlife that were around.
Bill was a caring, loving person, and when you saw him, he seemed to always have a smile on his face.
