LANCASTER - William D. Thompson II, 86, of Fletcher Street, died Tuesday February 11, 2014 at his home.
Mr. Thompson was born in Lancaster on June 4, 1927 the son of William D. Thompson I and Inza Thompson. He was a graduate of Lancaster Academy. During WWII he served with the Army Air Corps (US Air Force) in the Pacific Theater. This was a start to Bill's long military career as he continued to serve in the US Navy and the National Guard. He would proudly state his enlistment lasted 44 years, 11 months and 16 days.
Returning to Lancaster he worked various job including Santa's Village and the NH Sweepstakes Commission from which he retired. Bill also volunteered at the Lancaster Historical Society where he shared many life stories of his hometown and the military.
He was a member of the John Weeks VFW Post #3041 and served as commander from 1969 to 1970.
Family members include his five children Eldon Middleton of Oregon, William D. Thompson III of Lancaster, Wyatt D. Thompson of Lancaster, Wenda Thompson of Groveton, Wynta Samson of Lancaster; 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and his close friend Julie Hodgdon of Gorham who he affectionately called "the crazy lady from Gorham". He was predeceased by his wife Helen (Middleton) Thompson.
There are no visiting hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held Saturday morning May 31 at 11:00 AM in Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster.
